Lobuche East Peak Climbing

18 Days  |  Summit Altitude: 6,119 m  |  Moderate to Challenging

Introduction

Lobuche East stands at 6,119 metres in the Khumbu region of Nepal, close to the village of Lobuche and the classic Everest Base Camp trekking route. It is one of the most popular trekking peaks in Nepal and an outstanding choice for climbers who want to combine a high-altitude summit experience with the iconic scenery and cultural richness of the Everest region. The climbing approach follows the same trail used by Everest Base Camp trekkers as far as Lobuche, giving you the full Khumbu experience, including visits to Namche Bazaar, Tengboche Monastery, Dingboche, Everest Base Camp itself, and Kala Patthar, before the peak climbing begins.

Lobuche East is classified as a Group B trekking peak by the Nepal Mountaineering Association, meaning it involves moderate technical difficulties including fixed rope sections, steep snow and ice slopes, and some rocky scrambling on the southeast ridge. It is significantly more technical than Mera Peak and prior experience with crampon and rope work is strongly recommended. The route to the summit follows the southeast ridge and involves a mix of snow, ice, and rock terrain. From the summit the views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Pumori, and the Khumbu Glacier are extraordinary. Lobuche was first summited on April 25, 1984 by Laurence Nielson and Ang Gyalzen Sherpa. It remains one of the most rewarding and accessible technical peaks in the Khumbu.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1:  Arrival in Kathmandu   (1,400 m)

Our team meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfers you to your hotel in Thamel. The evening is free. Lobuche East is more technical than Mera Peak and prior experience with crampons and rope work will be discussed tomorrow at the briefing.

Day 2:  Briefing and Climbing Preparation in Kathmandu  (1,400 m)

Full expedition briefing at the Friendship Trekking office. Your climbing guide walks you through the complete route, the two acclimatization days, the Everest Base Camp section, and the summit day procedure on Lobuche. Permits are arranged today including the Nepal Mountaineering Association climbing permit. The afternoon is free.

Day 3:  Fly to Lukla, Trek to Phakding   (2,610 m)

Early morning flight to Lukla followed by the gentle trail down to Phakding through pine forest and prayer-flag bridges. A comfortable first walking day.

Day 4:  Phakding to Namche Bazaar   (3,440 m)

The classic Khumbu approach day. Following the Dudh Koshi north into Sagarmatha National Park and up the steep final climb to Namche. Everest appears above the ridgeline before town.

Day 5:  Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar   (3,440 m)

Morning hike to the Everest View Hotel ridge at 3,880 metres for outstanding mountain views. Afternoon free in Namche. A critical acclimatization stop before the higher sections ahead.

Day 6:  Namche Bazaar to Tengboche  (3,860 m)

A high ridge walk with outstanding mountain views past Khumjung and down to the Dudh Koshi crossing before climbing to Tengboche. The monastery and its evening ceremony are both worth attending.

Day 7:  Tengboche to Dingboche   (4,410 m)

Through Deboche and the ancient villages of Pangboche before climbing to Dingboche across open moorland. Ama Dablam dominates the southern skyline.

Day 8:  Acclimatization Day in Dingboche   (4,410 m)

Hike to the Nangkartshang ridge at around 5,100 metres for conditioning and outstanding views. Rest in the afternoon. This acclimatization day significantly improves summit success rates on Lobuche.

Day 9:  Dingboche to Lobuche   (4,910 m)

The trail climbs past the Thukla memorial chortens and across the Khumbu glacier moraine to Lobuche. The landscape is stark and powerful. From here the climbing begins in earnest.

Day 10:  Lobuche to Gorak Shep, Visit Everest Base Camp   (5,364 m / 5,164 m)

Walk to Gorak Shep, then push on across the moraine to Everest Base Camp at 5,364 metres. This is both an outstanding experience in its own right and excellent acclimatization for the Lobuche summit. Return to Gorak Shep for the night.

Day 11:  Kala Patthar Hike, Trek to Lobuche Base Camp   (5,545 m / 5,200 m)

Pre-dawn climb to Kala Patthar at 5,545 metres for the finest Everest sunrise view on any trekking route in Nepal. After breakfast, you descend to Lobuche and continue to the Lobuche Base Camp tents prepared by your support team at around 5,200 metres. Tonight is the first night camping.

Day 12:  Pre-Climb Training at Base Camp, Move to High Camp  (5,400 m)

Morning training session at base camp. Your climbing guide takes you through crampon use on actual snow and ice, ice axe arrest techniques, rope clipping, and the procedures for the summit day. After training you move up to High Camp at 5,400 metres where the tents are already set. An early dinner and an early sleep. Summit day begins at 1 or 2 in the morning.

Day 13:  Summit Lobuche East, Descend to Base Camp   (6,119 m / 5,200 m)

The summit day. You leave High Camp in complete darkness, moving carefully on the fixed ropes and mixed terrain of the southeast ridge. The climb involves rock, snow, and ice sections and is more physically and technically demanding than Mera Peak. The summit at 6,119 metres delivers a complete 360-degree panorama: Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumori, Ama Dablam, and the entire Khumbu Glacier visible below you. After the summit, you descend carefully back to Base Camp.

Day 14:  Reserve or Contingency Day   (5,200 m)

Reserved in case of bad weather or a repeat summit attempt. If the summit was successful and weather allows, this day can be used for the descent to Pangboche.

Day 15:  Trek to Pangboche  (3,930 m)

A welcome descent from the high camp environment back into the inhabited villages of the Khumbu. Pangboche is a quiet village with a well-known monastery and a much warmer climate than the upper valley. The drop in altitude is immediately felt.

Day 16:  Pangboche to Namche Bazaar   (3,440 m)

Continuing the descent through the familiar mid-valley scenery, past Tengboche and back to Namche. The body recovers quickly on descent days and Namche feels genuinely welcoming on return.

Day 17:  Namche Bazaar to Lukla   (2,860 m)

The last walking day. The trail drops back through the forest to Lukla. The celebration tonight in Lukla is very much deserved after an 18-day expedition that included Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar, and the summit of Lobuche East.

Day 18:  Fly Lukla to Kathmandu, Departure  (1,400 m)

Early morning flight back to Kathmandu. Transfer to hotel, rest, and then international departure. Thank you for climbing with Friendship Trekking.

Everest Base Camp Trek altitude 5,364m.
