Everest Base Camp Trek
15 Days | Maximum Altitude: 5,545 m | Moderate to Challenging
Introduction
The Khumbu region of Nepal is home to the highest concentration of major peaks on earth, and walking through it is unlike anything else in the world. This is the land of the Sherpa people, an ethnic group of Tibetan origin who have lived in these high valleys for centuries. Their culture is rooted in Tibetan Buddhism and every trail through the Khumbu is marked by prayer flags, mani walls carved with sacred scripture, and ancient gompas where monks conduct ceremonies that have continued for generations. The great monastery at Tengboche, perched on a ridge with Ama Dablam rising behind it, and the centuries-old gompa at Pangboche are still active religious centers where visitors are welcome to observe the evening prayers.
The Everest Base Camp Trek follows the same trail that Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay walked in 1953 before making the first ascent of the world's highest mountain. That history alone draws trekkers from every corner of the world, but the real pull is the landscape itself. The trail enters Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and passes through rhododendron forests, pine-covered ridges, juniper scrubland, and finally the bare rocky moraines of the Khumbu Glacier. The mountain views build steadily as you gain altitude. By the time you reach the upper valleys you are walking in the company of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Pumori, and dozens of other great peaks. Standing at Base Camp itself at 5,364 meters, with the Khumbu Icefall rising above you and the full Everest south face in front, is a moment that stays with you for the rest of your life.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400 m)
Your journey with Friendship Trekking begins the moment you land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Our representative will meet you at the arrival gate and transfer you to your hotel in Thamel. The rest of the day is free to settle in, explore the neighbourhood, and get your first taste of Nepal. Thamel is the busy heart of Kathmandu's tourist district, full of local restaurants, craft shops, and gear stores. If you have energy after the flight, a short walk to the Boudhanath Stupa is a wonderful way to begin your time here.
Day 2: Briefing and Trek Preparation in Kathmandu (1,400 m)
This morning, we hold a full trek briefing at the Friendship Trekking office. Your lead guide will take you through the complete route, explain the acclimatization plan in detail, check your gear, and answer every question you have. This is also the day we sort out your permits and any last-minute trekking supplies. Thamel has everything you could need. The afternoon is free for sightseeing. The Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath Stupa, and the old city of Patan are all within easy reach.
Day 3: Kathmandu to Lukla Flight, Trek to Phakding (2,610 m)
An early start for the 35-minute flight from Kathmandu to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla. The flight passes over deep river valleys and forested ridges before the tiny runway appears cut into the side of the mountain. Landing at Lukla is always a moment. From the airstrip you begin walking almost immediately. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi River north, dropping gently through pine and rhododendron forest and crossing several suspension bridges draped with prayer flags. You arrive at Phakding in three to four hours, a comfortable first walking day with the big mountains still ahead.
Day 4: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m)
One of the great days of the trek. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi valley upstream, crossing beautiful suspension bridges and passing through the village of Monjo where you enter Sagarmatha National Park and pay the park entry fee. Above Monjo the trail descends to the river and then makes a long, steep two-hour climb to Namche Bazaar. The effort is worth every step. As you crest the final ridge before town, pause and look behind you. On a clear day, Everest appears above the ridgeline for the very first time, framed by the valley below. It is a moment many trekkers describe as the one that made the whole journey feel real.
Day 5: Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar (3,440 m)
Acclimatization days are not rest days. They are some of the best days on the trek. Namche Bazaar is built into the curve of a natural bowl at 3,440 meters and is the social and commercial hub of the Khumbu. This morning we hike up to the Everest View Hotel ridge at around 3,880 meters, from where you can see Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kangtenga, and a full sweep of the Khumbu range. Back in Namche, the afternoon is yours to explore the local market, visit the Sherpa Culture Museum, or simply sit with a coffee and watch the mountains change colour as the afternoon light fades.
Day 6: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,860 m)
The trail climbs out of Namche along a high ridge with the entire Khumbu range laid out before you. The views on this section are outstanding and the walking is among the finest of the trek. You pass through the Sherpa village of Khumjung, home to a school founded by Edmund Hillary, and then descend steeply to the Dudh Koshi crossing before climbing through forest to Tengboche. The Tengboche Monastery sits on a wide hilltop ridge at 3,860 meters and is one of the most important religious sites in the Khumbu. If you arrive in the late afternoonyou may be able to join the evening prayer ceremony, a deeply moving experience with horns, drums, and chanting monks.
Day 7: Tengboche to Dingboche (4,410 m)
Leaving Tengboche, the trail descends through rhododendron and juniper forest to Deboche before crossing the Imja Khola and climbing through the ancient villages of Pangboche. The upper Pangboche monastery is said to be the oldest in the Khumbu and holds relics including what locals believe to be a yeti scalp. From Pangboche the trail climbs steadily across open moorland with Ama Dablam commanding the sky to the south, its twin peaks rising sharply above the valley. You reach Dingboche in the early afternoon, a quiet settlement in a wide valley with time to rest and prepare for the acclimatization day ahead.
Day 8: Acclimatization Day in Dingboche (4,410 m)
Today we hike up to the Nangkartshang ridge above Dingboche, reaching approximately 5,100 meters. The climb takes two to three hours and the views from the top are exceptional. Island Peak, Lhotse, Makalu, the distant summit of Cho Oyu, and the full sweep of the upper Khumbu are all visible on a clear morning. High-altitude hiking like this is the most effective way to help your body prepare for the days ahead. In the afternoon, rest, drink plenty of water, eat well, and go to bed at a reasonable hour.
Day 9: Dingboche to Lobuche (4,910 m)
The trail climbs north out of Dingboche and crosses into the Khumbu glacier moraine valley. Above the village of Thukla you pass a collection of memorial chortens and stone monuments dedicated to Sherpas and mountaineers who have lost their lives on Everest. It is a quiet and powerful place to stop for a moment. Above the chortens the trail levels out across the wide moraine and follows it north to Lobuche. The landscape here is stark and beautiful in a way that is hard to explain. Lobuche is basic but the mountains around it are extraordinary.
Day 10: Lobuche to Everest Base Camp, Back to Gorak Shep (5,364 m / 5,164 m)
The day the whole trek has been leading to. From Lobuche you walk to Gorak Shep, drop your overnight bags, and push on across the rocky glacier moraine to Everest Base Camp. The walk from Gorak Shep to Base Camp takes around two hours in each direction. The terrain is rough and the altitude means every step takes a little more focus, but the path is well-marked and the goal is clear. At Base Camp itself you are at 5,364 meters at the foot of the Khumbu Icefall with the south wall of Everest filling the sky ahead. Take your time here. Sit quietly if you want to. There is no need to rush. After returning to Gorak Shep for dinner, the early night is well earned.
Day 11: Kala Patthar Hike, Trek to Pheriche (5,545 m / 4,371 m)
You leave Gorak Shep before sunrise. The path to Kala Patthar is steep and dark at first but the headtorches of other trekkers ahead of you on the trail create a line of light going upward that is quite beautiful. At 5,545 meters, Kala Patthar sits directly opposite the south face of Everest. As the sun comes up and the mountain catches the first light, the whole face turns from grey to gold. Lhotse, Nuptse, and the Khumbu Icefall are all at eye level. After spending time on the summit, you begin the long descent all the way to Pheriche. The body feels the drop in altitude quickly and by evening your appetite will be strong.
Day 12: Pheriche to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m)
The descent continues through the middle Khumbu. You retrace the trail through Pangboche and Tengboche, passing the same views you saw on the way up but from a different angle now that you know the route well. There is a looser, more celebratory feel to walking days on the descent. The conversation flows more easily and the pace is natural. Namche Bazaar on return feels warmer and more festive than it did on the way up, and the restaurants seem better than you remembered.
Day 13: Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,860 m)
The final full walking day of the trek. The trail drops back down through the forest, over the prayer-flag suspension bridges, and along the Dudh Koshi valley to Lukla. It is a sentimental walk for most trekkers. The guides and porters begin to celebrate, the shared history of the past two weeks sits warmly between everyone in the group, and the last hour into Lukla has a very particular kind of satisfaction to it. Tonight in Lukla the celebration is genuine.
Day 14: Lukla to Kathmandu Flight (1,400 m)
The early morning flight back to Kathmandu takes around 35 minutes and brings you from the mountain world back to the noise and colour of the city. After arriving at the hotel, the afternoon is free for last-minute shopping, a proper shower, or simply lying down and letting two weeks of high-altitude walking catch up with you. In the evening, the Friendship Trekking team joins you for a farewell dinner in Thamel.
Day 15: International Departure (1,400 m)
Our team transfers you to Tribhuvan International Airport in time for your flight. Thank you for choosing Friendship Trekking for the Everest Base Camp Trek. We hope the Khumbu showed you everything it can offer, and we hope to walk with you again someday.
