Langtang Valley and Gosaikunda Trek

13 Days  |  Maximum Altitude: 4,773 m  |  Moderate

Introduction

The Langtang region sits just 52 kilometres north of Kathmandu, making it the closest major trekking destination to Nepal's capital, yet it feels a world away from the city. The Langtang Valley is known as the valley of glaciers, a wide, open glacial corridor flanked by Langtang Lirung at 7,234 metres to the north and a line of dramatic ridges and peaks along the Tibetan border. The valley is part of Langtang National Park, the first Himalayan national park in Nepal, established in 1976. The park is rich in biodiversity, with red panda, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan tahr, and over 250 species of birds found within its boundaries.

The people of the Langtang Valley are the Tamang, a community of Tibetan origin whose language, clothing, and Buddhist traditions closely resemble those of Tibet. Their villages are built of stone with flat roofs, surrounded by prayer wheels, chortens, and mani walls. The rebuilt village of Langtang, which was almost entirely destroyed in the 2015 earthquake, stands today as a testament to the resilience of the Tamang community. Kyanjin Gompa at the head of the valley is an ancient monastery surrounded by yak pastures, glacial streams, and a famous yak cheese factory that produces cheese using methods originally introduced with Swiss support. The mountains visible from the upper valley include Langtang Lirung, Langtang Ri, Gangchenpo, Dorje Lakpa, Naya Kanga, and the distant Shishapangma across the border in Tibet. The second part of this trek crosses to the sacred Gosaikunda Lakes at 4,380 metres, a deeply significant site for both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims, particularly during the Janai Purnima festival in August when thousands of devotees travel here to bathe in the holy water. The route descends from Gosaikunda via the high Lauribina La pass at 4,610 metres to Dhunche and back to Kathmandu.

Major Highlights

•Kyanjin Gompa and the Langtang Glacier Views: Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 metres is the cultural and geographic heart of the Langtang Valley. The ancient monastery, the yak cheese factory, and the outstanding views of Langtang Lirung and the glaciers above make it one of the most rewarding valley destinations in Nepal.

•Gosaikunda Lake: The sacred lake at 4,380 metres is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Nepal for both Hindus and Buddhists. Surrounded by rugged mountains and the remains of smaller sacred lakes, Gosaikunda has a spiritual atmosphere that is very different from any other destination on this trek.

•Tamang Culture and Langtang National Park: Walking through the Tamang villages of the Langtang Valley gives an authentic encounter with a mountain community whose traditions and Buddhist culture have been shaped over centuries of life at high altitude. The National Park forest is exceptional for birdwatching and wildlife, and the rhododendron canopy in spring is among the finest in Nepal.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1:  Arrival in Kathmandu   (1,400 m)

Our team meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfers you to your hotel in Thamel. The evening is free for you to settle in and explore the area. Kathmandu is always a lively and engaging first night before a Himalayan trek.

Day 2:  Briefing and Trek Preparation in Kathmandu  (1,400 m)

We meet at the Friendship Trekking office for a full briefing on the route, the Gosaikunda crossing, altitude considerations, and permit requirements. The afternoon is free for sightseeing. Boudhanath and Pashupatinath are both close by and excellent introductions to Nepali religious culture.

Day 3:  Drive Kathmandu to Syabrubesi   (1,460 m)

A drive of around six to seven hours north from Kathmandu through the Trishuli Valley to Syabrubesi, the main gateway village for the Langtang trek. The road follows river valleys and passes through the Rasuwa district. Syabrubesi has good tea houses and is a pleasant first base in the hills.

Day 4:  Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel   (2,470 m)

The trail enters Langtang National Park shortly after Syabrubesi and follows the Langtang Khola river upward through dense sub-tropical forest. The trees are enormous and the path is relatively gentle. You pass through Bamboo and Riverside before reaching Lama Hotel, a cluster of tea houses in a forest clearing. A four to five hour walk with good forest scenery throughout.

Day 5:  Lama Hotel to Langtang Village   (3,430 m)

The forest gradually opens as you gain altitude and by the time you approach Langtang Village the landscape has shifted completely to wide glacial meadows and open ridgelines. The rebuilt village of Langtang, reconstructed after the 2015 earthquake, sits in a broad grassy valley with Langtang Lirung rising steeply to the north. The scale of the mountains here is genuinely impressive and the village community is warm and welcoming.

Day 6:  Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa   (3,870 m)

A short walk of two to three hours up the flat-bottomed valley floor to Kyanjin Gompa. The landscape here is wide and open with yaks grazing on the pastures and the ice falls of Langtang Lirung visible directly above. The ancient monastery is surrounded by prayer flags and the famous yak cheese factory sits just beside it. Try the fresh cheese with your afternoon tea. The rooftop views of the surrounding peaks are outstanding.

Day 7:  Acclimatization Day in Kyanjin Gompa, Kyanjin Ri Hike   (3,870 m / 4,773 m)

Today we hike to Kyanjin Ri at 4,773 metres, the finest viewpoint in the Langtang Valley. The climb takes around two to three hours and the view from the summit is exceptional. Langtang Lirung, Langtang Ri, Yala Peak, Gangchenpo, Dorje Lakpa, and the distant peaks of Tibet all appear clearly on a good day. The afternoon back in Kyanjin is free for rest or a walk to the edge of the Lirung Glacier.

Day 8:  Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel   (2,470 m)

The descent begins. The trail retraces the valley floor back past Langtang Village and into the upper forest, descending steadily to Lama Hotel. Walking downhill through the forest at the end of the day, with the big mountains behind you, is one of the pleasures of the return leg of any Langtang trek.

Day 9:  Lama Hotel to Sing Gompa via Thulo Syabru  (3,250 m)

Today you leave the main Langtang trail and climb westward toward the Gosaikunda section of the trek. The trail passes through Thulo Syabru, a large Tamang village with good views, and then climbs through pine and rhododendron forest to Sing Gompa, a small settlement with a yak cheese factory and a monastery. This section has a completely different character from the main Langtang Valley and the forest is beautiful.

Day 10:  Sing Gompa to Gosaikunda Lake   (4,380 m)

The most physically demanding day of the trek. From Sing Gompa the trail climbs steadily through forest and then open alpine terrain, passing through Cholang Pati and then Lauribina Yak before the final ascent to Gosaikunda. The lake appears suddenly as you crest the ridge, its deep blue water surrounded by rocky peaks and prayer flags. According to Hindu legend, Lord Shiva created Gosaikunda with his trident to quench his thirst after swallowing poison that threatened to destroy the world. The atmosphere here is peaceful and deeply sacred.

Day 11:  Gosaikunda over Lauribina La to Dhunche   (1,960 m)

The trail descends from Gosaikunda via the Lauribina La pass at 4,610 metres, crossing a high ridge with wide views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The descent to Dhunche is long, dropping through forest and past several small villages. By the time you reach Dhunche you will have covered significant distance and the drop in altitude means a warm evening and a welcome rest.

Day 12:  Drive Dhunche to Kathmandu   (1,400 m)

A drive of around five to six hours back to Kathmandu via the Trishuli Valley. On arrival, the afternoon is free for shopping, sightseeing, or rest. The Friendship Trekking team joins you for a farewell dinner in the evening.

Day 13:  International Departure   (1,400 m)

Our team transfers you to the airport for your international flight. The Langtang Valley and Gosaikunda Trek covers two completely different landscapes and two deeply meaningful cultural and spiritual sites in 13 days. Thank you for trekking with Friendship Trekking.
