Newar

The Newar people are the inhabitants of the vallies Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and

Lalitpur. The rest are spread almost equally through the eastern and western

hills and terai. They are found in the greatest numbers in the capital city. They

are small shopkeepers, big businessman, importers, exportes, farmers,

craftsmen and so on. They are one of the oldest known groups in Nepal.

Of all the Nepali people, Newars observe the greatest number of festivals and

feasts. They spend a great amount of money and food on such occassions, the

food consisting of buffalo meat, beaten rice, vegetables, pickles, curd and large

quantities of beer.

Newar people are from Buddhism as well as Hindu background. They observe

a number of religious festivals like Indra jatra, Gai jatra, Rath jatra, Buddha

jayanti, Dashain, Tihar etc.
